Karen Smith

Lecturer/Assistant Professor, University College Dublin

I am a lecturer in equality studies and social justice in UCD, attached to the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice. My main research interests lie in the area of critical childhood studies and the government of childhood/government of child-adult relations. I am interested in the relationship between the government of childhood and broader questions related to power and inequality. My research to date has engaged with various areas of Irish law and policy affecting children and families including child welfare and protection; education; youth justice; social protection; children's rights and participation. I have a particular interest in the application of governmentality theory to the critical examination of law and policy and in discourse theory and research. My first book The Government of Childhood: Discourse, Power and Subjectivity was published by PalgraveMacmillan in 2014.
